The Essential Services Buildings of the Canary Islands are high-security infrastructures structurally designed to withstand extreme environmental catastrophes, ranging from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions. Conceived as resilient and autonomous fortresses, they ensure uninterrupted critical operability.
MARTÍNEZ SEGOVIA delivered the complete civil and structural engineering for both highly singular buildings, designed to centralize security and emergency command operations, protecting a high-availability Data Processing Center (DPC) and strategic management areas.
The structural solution is based on reinforced concrete, using a monolithic system composed of a lightened general foundation slab, aimed at homogenizing deformations, rectangular columns with decreasing cross-sections along the height, and solid floor slabs with a depth of 30 cm.
The main structure is organized through a reinforced concrete column grid with spans of 8.40 × 8.40 m and 12.00 × 8.40 m, providing large clear spans, functional flexibility, and a high level of structural robustness.
Among the most distinctive features of the project are a façade supported by a sequence of slender columns and an iconic interior space of 320 m², known as “the medusa”, suspended from the roof structure and forming a viewpoint over the third floor.
